Who needs Counselling?

Everyone needs counselling (therapy). At some stage in our lives we all experience a time in our life when, if we are not suffering from one of the situations listed above, we may simply be not happy or fulfilled in our life, without knowing why. On the other hand, you may know exactly why you are in difficulty, but you are unable to move forward or confide in friends or family because they are too close This difficult time can be an ideal opportunity to get help with exploring a new direction for your life, or to make a small change in career or relationships, and can lead to making positive and necessary life changes.

Your best friend or close family member may be willing, but unable to help you through a difficult or uncertain time in your life.  In times of difficulty, they are often too close, and have your vested interest too much at heart, to be able to help in an effective and lasting way. Or you may not want to worry them or to have too much focus on your situation in your daily life.  You may feel you are burdening them with your problems and worries, or you simply cannot talk to them for a host of other reasons.

This is when a Counsellor is the ideal person to talk to, as they are impartial to your daily life and can see your situation from an unbiased perspective.  The therapist’s job is to empathically listen in a non-judgemental way, to support and explore with the client, to help him to come to his own solutions and conclusions, aspirations and goals, without giving specific advice or direction.

The process of counselling and psychotherapy opens up a new-found self-awareness for the client, enabling him to understand how and why certain difficult situations affect him, and how to better deal with these situations should they arise again.   Through this new-found self-awareness, the client can discover new ways of coping and making better choices for now and for the future.

What is the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

Contrary to the meaning of the word ‘counsel’ (advice), the Counsellor or Therapist’s job is not geared towards giving advice.  Counselling is an exploration at a basic level of a client’s situation, and the process therein on a superficial level.  Psychotherapy explores the client’s history and brings to light a deeper understanding of himself and aspects of his unconscious behaviour. Through the understanding of the triggers of his behaviour, the client can make changes to his life’s situations.

Couple Counselling

Couple counselling is available at Life and Soul.

Confidentiality for Clients

All Counsellors and Psychotherapists are bound by the Codes of Ethics of all accreditation associations,  never to disclose the identity or affairs of her clients outside the therapy room.  However, all therapists must attend one hour of supervision for each ten sessions of client work.  Supervision is not carried out during client sessions, it is a meeting between the Supervisor and the Counsellor Psychotherapist. The client’s case is discussed with the Supervisor, but their identity is never disclosed.   Supervision is not only mandatory in order to maintain a sufficient standard of service for the client, but it is necessary for the therapist to get more insight and support for his/her work.
